Every year on April 14th, National Fire Service (NFS) Day is marked throughout India to honour the firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty and highlight the significance of the fire service.
- In honour of the Fire Service workers who perished on April 14, 1944, in the catastrophic Bombay explosion at the Victoria Dock in the Mumbai Port, the day is also observed as a Martyr's Day.
"Awareness in Fire Safety for Growth of National Infrastructure" (AGNI) is the theme of National Fire Service Day/Week 2023.
Note: "Learn Fire Safety, Increase Productivity" was the topic for National Fire Service Day in 2022.
Every year, from April 14 to 20, the nation observes Fire Service Week (FSW), also known as Fire Prevention Week, under the direction of the Fire Adviser, Ministry of Home Affairs.
Since 1999, the National Safety Council (NSC) has promoted the FSW Campaign in an effort to increase public and employee understanding of fire safety.
The 1944 Bombay Explosion, often referred to as the Bombay Dock explosion, took place on April 14, 1944, at the Victoria Dock in the British Indian city of Bombay (now Mumbai, Maharashtra).
The explosion happened when the British ship SS Fort Stikine caught fire while transporting a mixed load of ammunition, gold, and cotton bales together with roughly 1,400 tonnes of explosives.
- Around 800 to 1300 people, including 71 firefighters, were killed in the explosion.
- The ship was split in half by the explosion, which also injured the nearby ships.
- The Bombay Dock explosion will commemorate its 79th anniversary in 2023.
